KITCHEN SUITE

COMPLETED November 2025

The tile had either fallen off the walls or held up by paper tape. It was no longer viable as a room on the tour.

“Glazing Glory: Restoring the Historic Kitchen at Staatsburgh,” the largest project we have undertaken, was funded in 2023 in part with a generous grant of $300,000 from the New York State Park and Trail Grant Program (NYSPTGP). The total cost was $536,000 with remaining funding from donors like you.

This restoration will allow a more inclusive and essential story to be told of the kitchen as the heart of the mansion and how the estate’s 3 French chefs, kitchen staff, and servants created and served gourmet, 12-course French cuisine in an enormous formal dining room, using 19th and 20th-century tools and technology, to high society guests.

As John Bute, the 8th Marquess of Bute and great-great-nephew of Gladys Phipps, said in his letter of support for this project, “Being able to see and understand how chefs in the past worked and the spaces they used is a porfound experience. Culinary history and arts are unique in the way it transcends in engaging the public understanding the past and building a link between us and our ancestors.”

The project started with the removal of the existing tile and clearing the old mortar off the walls of three rooms in the Kitchen Suite – the main kitchen, servants hallway and scullery. New, historically accurate tile was put up and the ceilings repaired and painted.

We can’t wait to re-install the collections and build out the story.

“These projects can be pretty involved when we do it right. They can take time and need support so we’re very grateful to the Friends of Mills for helping us with these projects.”
